Mumbai Boat Accident: Death Toll Rises to 14 as Search Continues for Missing Boy
December 21, 2024 , The tragic Mumbai Boat Accident collision off the Mumbai coast has claimed another life, bringing the confirmed death toll to 14. Rescue teams recovered the body of a 43-year-old man on Thursday, December 19, 2024. Efforts are ongoing to locate a seven-year-old boy who remains missing following the incident.
The accident occurred on Wednesday, December 18, when an Indian Navy speedboat, undergoing engine trials, lost control and collided with the passenger ferry ‘Neel Kamal.’ The ferry, carrying over 100 passengers, was en route from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ancient caves. The collision caused the ferry to capsize, leading to multiple casualties.
Among the deceased are three Navy personnel. Rescue operations have successfully saved 98 individuals, including two with injuries. The search for the missing boy involves a naval helicopter and vessels from both the Navy and Coast Guard, with eight boats participating in the search and rescue efforts.
In response to the tragedy, the Indian Navy has convened a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision. Preliminary findings suggest that the ferry was overloaded, carrying more than its permitted capacity of 90 passengers. Additionally, authorities have filed charges against the operator of the naval speedboat under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to causing death by negligence and endangering life.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar addressed the state assembly, noting that among the injured are a four-year-old girl and an eight-month pregnant woman, both reported to be in stable condition. He also mentioned that an investigation is underway regarding potential violations of the Inland Vessels Act.
In the wake of the accident, authorities have mandated the use of life jackets for all passengers embarking on boat rides from the Gateway of India. This measure aims to enhance safety and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced financial relief measures, including an ex-gratia payment of ₹200,000 for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
As the search continues for the missing boy, the incident has raised concerns about maritime safety regulations and enforcement in the region. The findings of the Navy’s inquiry are awaited to provide clarity on the causes of the collision and to recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
